At Carmona historic city centre, more than 20 palatial homes of different typologies are recorded. Our project is carried out at a palatial home from the XIV century. The ground plan is formed by elongated corridors surrounding a central patio, which is the organizing element that articulates all the rooms. Three of the patio’s sides are arcaded, showing an obvious Islamic influence.

With our work we expect to renovate the validity of this sort of architecture that has repeated spatial designs, constructive techniques and ornamental lexicon throughout centuries. We will try to adapt these cultural codes that determine function and shape to our nowadays requirements.

The original hallway has been integrated to one of the dwellings, so that the access takes place through the carriage’s patio. The dwellings may have from one to three bedrooms, and are set, as traditionally, around the central patio which becomes a source of lighting, circulation and neighbourhood relationship.

The project maintains the original framework so that the resulting houses have a height clearance of 4.60 m. This headroom makes possible to include attics, generating lofts. The coffered ceiling over the staircase and the dwellings on the first floor has been restored.

Along with the refurbishment of the building, the demolition of a part of the building has been carried out due to its tumbledown condition. In its place a new building containing dwellings with larger surfaces that ventilate through a third courtyard can be found.
